Installing a split system heat pump in your home is one of the most effective ways of providing year-round comfort to your household. Having your heat pump / air conditioner installed by a qualified technician ensures reliable and safe operation of the unit for years to come.
If you are considering upgrading your heat pump / air conditioner, understanding the installation process can be beneficial, both as part of your research and for any future troubleshooting your unit requires. Split system heat pumps / air conditioners should be installed by licenced professionals, such as one of our Fujitsu General Accredited Installers. They will carry out the following steps to ensure a functional and safe heating and cooling setup for your home.
Before installing a new split system / air conditioner, you and your technicians will need to decide on the locations of both the indoor and outdoor units, prioritising efficiency and safety.
Indoor units should be placed in a central location for even heating or cooling throughout the room. If possible, your technician will mount the unit away from heat sources or areas that receive direct sunlight, at least 2m high on the wall with enough clearance around it to ensure efficient airflow.
Split system heat pump / air conditioners also include an outdoor unit, which your technician will advise on the best placement for. Typically, this will be on a flat, stable surface with sufficient clearance and ventilation for efficient operation. If you require more than one indoor unit installed you may like to consider a multi system which allows for multiple indoor units to be installed to just one outdoor unit.
The first step in mounting the indoor unit of a split system heat pump / air conditioner is to affix the mounting bracket to the wall. Before offering the unit to the wall, your installer will also drill a hole for wires and piping to be run to the unit. The indoor unit can then be attached onto the bracket and secured into place.
Your installer will position the outdoor unit of your heat pump / air conditioner in the predetermined location, ensuring sufficient clearance for airflow and maintenance. The unit will then be anchored to its base plate.
The next step in the heat pump / air conditioning installation process is to connect the indoor and outdoor units. Your installer will ensure that the refrigerant pipework is connected securely between the unit to prevent leaks during use. Qualified electricians will then connect the wiring to enable the system to operate.
With all hardware installed, your installer will perform a final check before reconnecting the power to your home and testing the unit. At this point, you will be given instructions on how to operate the unit’s remote control and Wi-Fi controller, if equipped.
While the system is operating, your installation team may perform several background checks to ensure your heat pump / air conditioner is operating correctly. Your installer may:
Check the heating and cooling performance of the system by letting the unit run for a few minutes and measuring the air temperature.
Repeat the performance testing process in heating mode.
Check for excess noise levels from both the indoor and outdoor units.
Test the drainage system by pouring a small amount of water into the drain tray to simulate condensation.
Inspect for refrigerant leaks by spraying soapy water on connections.
Knowing how to install a split system heat pump / air conditioner may be helpful in deciding where units should be placed, or to work out what type of system will best suit your home. However, it is important to know that only licensed professionals should handle tasks involving electrical work or refrigerant. For this reason, professional installation is critical.
